A Media Server is classified from Feature Server separately because applications need specific processing for media content. It means a Media Server must be supported by digital signal processing hardware with high performance.

ImageMedia Gateway, also commonly referred to as VoIP Gateway is device which provides connection between an endpoint on VoIP packet-switched network and PSTN circuit-switched network.

The gateway translates between transmission formats and the communication protocols that are used on each side. The gateway packetizes the voice and routes it over VoIP network. In carrier class system, media gateways are provided as stand-alone devices.

A media gateway resides on the edge of a network and simply interfaces between Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) and IP networks. Analog signal from a handset are digitized, compressed, and packetized for transmiting over an IP network. In the inverse, incoming calls are  translated and decompressed from an IP network for reception on analog or digital telephone devices.

In general, a media gateway consist of three key elements: an interface for the TDM side of the network, an interface for the packet side of the network, and the necessary signal processing between the sides. In the TDM side, connections are provided by analog interface (FXO, FXS) or digital interface (T1, E1). In the IP network, connections to media gateway are provided by ethernet connection (WAN, LAN). Signal processing functions include coding and decoding of the voice signal using G.711, G.723.1, G.729 voice compression algorithm, Echo Cancellation, Voice Active Detection (VAD), Comfort Noise Generator (CNG), and Jitter Buffer. A Media Gateway provides IP communication protocol including H.323, Session Innitiation Protocol (SIP), Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP), or Megaco.

Depending on its density, Media Gateways can be classified into residential or small office home office (SOHO), enterprise, or carrier grade. Residential Gateway is a small density gateway that is usually consisting of 2, 4, 8, 16, or 24 analog port FXO or FXS.

Enterprise Gateways aggregate legacy telephone infrastructure for interface with VoIP networks. This is done by connecting a gateway to the trunk side of a legacy PBX. The gateways are usually configured in multiples of T1 or E1 cards in a single chassis that interface with the trunk side of the PBX. Carrier-Grade Gateway is a high density gateway that connects to Class 4 or Class 5 switches in a central office.
